Remote Tech Job Salary Statistics For Q2 2023

Updated: Jul 25

Over the past few months, we posted close to 1000 fully remote jobs on our job board. So, we thought we’d take a look at some of the more important statistics and trends during the time.

Before we get into these numbers, please note that developer jobs are NOT included in this set. We’re only looking at non-developer tech jobs here.

We’ve got a roundup of developer job statistics that you can read here.

With that out of the way, let’s get started:

Remote tech job statistics for Q2 2023

To start off, these are the top 10 tech roles that companies looked for:

  1. Principal Software Engineer

  2. Staff Software Engineer

  3. Senior Software Engineer

  4. Senior Data Engineer

  5. Staff Data Engineer

  6. Senior Data Analyst

  7. Software Engineer

  8. Sr. DevOps Engineer

  9. Data Engineer

  10. Data Analyst

The below graph shows the average salaries that were offered for each of these roles on Simple Job Listings.

Now, most roles actually offer a “range” of salary rather than a fixed amount.

For example, for a Data analyst, the job description might mention that the pay is between $100,000 and $150,000.

Have you ever paid close attention to the sheer gap there is?

We did. And we found quite a few interesting things.

The below graph shows you how much “variance” there is, on average, for each role.

NOTE: The variance isn’t in the salary. It’s in the upper band and the lower band of the salary offered. In our previous example, the variance would be $50,000. That’s because the lower band is $100,000 and the upper band is $150,000.

The below graph shows you how much variance there is for the top ten designations that we looked at.

How to read a box plot graph:

  1. Locate the box in the middle of the plot. It represents the interquartile range (IQR), showing where the central 50% of the data lies.

  2. The median, or the middle value, is marked by a line within the box.

  3. The lower and upper whiskers extend from the box, indicating the range of the data, excluding any outliers.

  4. Outliers, if present, are depicted as individual points outside the whiskers.

  5. Analyze the plot to understand the data's dispersion, skewness, and presence of outliers.

Now, given that we know variances can be really high, let’s look at the lows and the highs.

The two graphs below show you the range of upper band salaries (SALARY HIGH) and lower band salaries (SALARY LOW) for the roles.

The Salary High graph will show you the maximum pay that companies were willing to offer for the roles.

The Salary Low graph will show you the lowest that companies were willing to offer for the roles.

The salary for this role varies more widely than for Data Analysts, with a range from $80,000 to $150,000. This $70,000 difference between the highest and lowest salary indicates more variability in the compensation offered for this role.

This could reflect the varying complexities of the data systems being developed, as well as differences in the specific technical skills required.

Principal Software Engineers

Principal Software Engineers command the highest average salary among these roles, at $214,833.

This reflects the seniority and expertise required for this position, which often involves leading the design and development of software systems.

Conclusion

These are the main trends and statistics for tech jobs in Q2 of 2023. One of the things that you'll notice is that the salaries seem significantly higher for each role we've reported. The reason is two-fold.

  1. We are a curated job board. So, we seek out very high-quality jobs, and jobs like that usually pay quite well.

  2. There aren't a lot of remote jobs for freshers. It's a clear trend that we've noticed. Most companies, when they want a remote employee, want to know that they have at least two years of professional experience. This is maybe because they feel that training employees remotely is difficult but that's just an educated guess, at best. Once you're dealing with professionals who have a bit of experience, salaries in the tech space start going pretty high.

That's why the salaries on our job board are high. If you're also looking for a remote job, check out our job board. You already know the pay but there's more. Most jobs that we list simply aren't listed anywhere else.
